Seven Kingdoms - Brothers of the Night (2007)

Really decent power metal that slipped under my radar when it was released. Drawing their lyrical inspiration from the American Tolkien, Kingdoms play power metal that with thrash influences that remind me at times of the better parts of 'Night of the Stormrider'. Solid listen.

Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses - Perils(2005)

"Miasma & the Carousel of Headless Horses are a British instrumental quintet that plays dark, antiquated sounding music encompassing elements of Eastern European folk, avant-rock, broken-down calliope music, and neo-classical film composition. More a trip to an anachronistic world of neo-baroque psychedelia than a simple study in diced-up ecclecticism, the music on Perils sways between lush chamber orientated melancholia, apocalyptic bombast, and epic ghost train high-drama. Featuring members of Guapo, Aethenor, Chrome Hoof and Cathedral."

GLAZED BABY

GLAZED BABY was born in 1991 to rock the world. Dale, Josh and Andy were determined to ride the biggest sound possible out of their aimless existence in New England. This need propelled the three through four years of relentless touring and recording. The trio's Handgun and Karmic Debt, recorded with Tim O'Heir and Squeeze the Tail, Suck the Head, recorded with Steve Albini, are testimonials to their awesome rock & roll power.
This great sonic weight proved to be too much for Josh, who left the band to join the Unsane. Joel promptly came to the rescue and his addition was celebrated by a victorious tour of America. Later in the year, Josh returned to the GB fold in time for a 3 month tour and to record the band's second monster LP, Atomic Communists.
Shortly thereafter, Josh and Joel left for Kansas City to join Season to Risk and Shiner. To coincide with this blow, the band's label, Red Decibel, folded. The elixir that would heal GB's rock & roll soul came in the form of Dave and Scott. The new incarnation of GB rehearsed for one week before smashing huge audiences to paste on a nationwide tour with Zeni Geva and Today is the Day.
A few months and short jaunts later, Glazed Baby entered Six Finger Satellite's Parlour to record songs over the holidays. Ringing in 1997 with a new album nearly completed, the members of GB wend their separate ways to form other successful touring and recording combos. The band briefly reunited in 1999 to release it's final LP, Ancient Chinese Secret, a fitting document of the world's heaviest band.
During it's career, Glazed Baby shared the stage with Helmet, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Surgery, Jawbox, White Zombie, Tar, Tool, Fight, Smashing Pumpkins, Tesco Vee, The Laughing Hyenas, The Jesus Lizard, Unsane, Pearl Jam, GWAR, 13, Buzzoven, EyeHateGod and Nirvana.

Harum Scarum - Mental Health
All female crust punk from portland. they lost a member and subsequent albums lost part of their appeal. i don't know if they're still active, but this first album of theirs is an excellent crust/punk record. i've also typed out the lyrics and included them in a file.
Caught in between someone else's lies and mine. This world makes sense about none of the time. I've learned everything backwards, hateful... my head is spinning out of control. I can't even see anymore. Not what is self-inflicted by fear. My sleep is broken, I can't even breathe. My sanity a token, inside and outside... by the the absence by the pain, by the absence by the pain. They say I've gone mad they give me pills to clear my head... cuz doctors know best... I can't trust myself... in the name of mental health.

Top 5 1st-Gen Shoegaze Albums
"1st-Gen" meaning any/all groups formed prior to '93. These aren't listed in any specific order, but all fit somewhere in my top 5 list (although My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive are omitted, due to their position as leaders of the genre).
Catherine Wheel (formed '90) - Ferment (released '92)

Catherine Wheel are one of the best examples of the breadth that the shoegaze genre could achieve. While they surely have a very textured sound, often enough with that swirly/heady kind of vibe that shoegaze often gives off, they are also a very progression-conscious, sometimes even rock-oriented, band - there is movement in their music in addition to the haziness that a lot of other bands contained in this category are content to simply get lost in.
dl
Chapterhouse (formed '87) - Whirlpool (released '91)

Chapterhouse remind me a bit of a mix between The Jesus & Mary Chain's less-abrasive moments and Ecstasy & Wine-era By Bloody Valentine, meaning that there's a bit of a 60's-pop/playful kind of vibe accompanying the (occasionally) cacophonous background music. Altogether, its not at all harsh (as my evocation of The Jesus & Mary Chain may suggest), and I say "remind" because there is far more to this album than what I just said (the vocals in particular I think are quite good).
dl
The Ecstasy of St. Theresa (formed '90) - Sussurate (released '92)

With the exception of The Jesus & Mary Chain (from Scotland) The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa are the only group in this list that falls outside of England... and they are from Czechoslovakia (never saw that one coming). Their sound is a bit like Catherine Wheel's, in that each song has a rather definite progression/s, and I'd say that they are even more into the fusion of shoegaze and rock/indie than Catherine Wheel was - so much so that at times I'm pretty sure Dinosaur Jr. is their backing band. But despite their best attempts at incorporating something that was a bit different into a genre that was, at the time, very rigid, they can play as rigidly as the best of them (track 2 is a wonderful example of that). Almost drone-y, their meditations on distortion, paired with Katerina's almost ghost-like vocals, The Ecstasy of St. Theresa would be one of my top picks for accompanying a hallucinogenic experience.
dl
The Jesus & Mary Chain (formed '83) - Psychocandy (released '85)

These guys are pretty well known, but compared to MBV and Slowdive, they still fall to the wayside it seems. Which is unfortunate, because these guys are basically a perfect combination of MBV distortion and composition and Joy Division rhythm and, maybe half the time, vocals. And they're loud, too. In my opinion, these guys blow MBV out of the water when it comes down to sheer abrasive-ness... yet somehow it comes off as very mellow.
dl
Lush (formed '88) - Split (released'94)

Lush borders on Cocteau Twins territory at times. That's probably the first thing to get out of the way. They have a very prominent rhythm section, and quite a few vocal melodies going on, with some very trebly guitars contrasting the bass. Distortion wise, they're nothing to gawk at, and so with what I've just said I feel like these guys are a good example of the transition that shoegaze started going through around this time ('94/'95) - it got pop-ier, less distorted, but still has a distinctly distant kind of sound... perhaps that's due to the rather high female vocals, the very-low-presence/high-treble guitar, or the repetitive but not-highlighted use of crash cymbols, but there is something unmistakably shoegaze-y about this album, and its a real killer (especially track 3).

Put simply this is one of the best albums Týr has ever made.
