Anneke Van Giersbergen and Danny Cavanagh - In Parallel [2009]

Danny Cavanagh from Anathema and the lady from The Gathering made an album that consists of Anathema songs, Gathering songs and a few cover songs from bands such as Fleetwood Mac, Massive Attack and... Dolly Parton?

This was only available at a few live shows they played in Europe.

Jude The Obscure - The Coldest Winter (2003)

i loved this when it came out, even though you could argue this sound was already hopelessly beaten into the ground by this point. i think it still stands up pretty decently today.

Bruce McCulloch - Shame-Based Man (1995)

in my opinion, "comedy songs" are usually terrible but this transcends your typical weird al or adam sandler kind of thing. you'll recognize bits of this from Kids in the Hall sketches too if, like me, you were a big fan of that show. often more strange and introspective than outright funny but i like it a lot. i can't promise that you will.

Lou Barlow - Goodnight Unknown (2009)

it's a new Lou Barlow (Sebadoh/Dinosaur Jr./Folk Implosion) solo album. with none other than Mr. Dale Crover on the drums.

Death in June - But What Ends When Symbols Shatter? (1992)

Someone at work burnt me this. Weird Celtic goth shoegaze. I wasn't feeling it at first, but with the season change I've been putting it on a little more. Can be truly scary while under the influence. For some reason I think of this or like a fucked up spaghetti western while listening.

Sunset Notes by Michio Kurihara

You know Michio, he plays with Ghost, the Stars and some guy named, Boris. This is a very spread out album ranging from old 70s psychedelic stuff to some shoe-gaze type style songs. Probably my pick on the whole album would be the third track, 'Wind Waltzes.' A simple song with very soft spoken singing on it with guitar and keyboards. It's a good listen and I'd recommend it to anyone. Enjoy.

I digress. anyone play Borderlands?

several different things, none of which are metal

Shoegazey band that sounds like various bits of Portishead and Bjork with ambient and noiser rock influences mixed in.

Francophone psychedelic chamber pop. Or something.

Good morose post-punk/rock, definitely mining 3mp territory, but that's hardly a crime.

I'll leave it up to all you guys to debate all the things that you think are wrong with this album, or how much no one cares about this band, etc...I'm just here to share some music.

*please add a witty description here, I think it's actually a good idea now, since I'm positive it will be more amusing than anything I would come up with

Aus-Rotten - ...And Now Back To Our Programming

god must've caught seven angels masturbating the day this band broke up. it's tragic this seemingly unstoppable band did come to a halt after three releases. they fell under crust punk and their name is german for "mass murder," so you've got a good idea what they sound like. what you may not expect is that they uncannily found a way incorporate creativity into the punk sound, and did it damn near perfect.

later they went on to form the capable but not-quite-as-good behind enemy lines and the passable but forgettable caustic christ. most albums age, but i've been listening to this since 17 and it hasn't changed. it's still as striking and relevant as the first time i heard it. this album in particular stands out for its excellent 16-minute title track including an essay worth of aggressive sociopolitical lyrics [excerpt]:

Your college campus with your liberal views
An education or your head in a noose
And after you graduate where will you go
You'll have nowhere to live and nothing to show
Come put on a suit and come work for us
You'll become everything you hate and all you disgust
You'll forget who you were, what you did,
and what you stood for
You'll be trapped in your office
You'll be trapped in traffic
You'll be trapped in your home
You'll be trapped in your church
You'll be trapped in your mind
Trapped like rats on the same sinking ship
Trapped again and getting used to it
And when you grow old with your husband or with your wife
You'll be used to it, you'll be used to it
And to think that your whole fucking life
You took our shit
