GLAZED BABY

GLAZED BABY was born in 1991 to rock the world. Dale, Josh and Andy were determined to ride the biggest sound possible out of their aimless existence in New England. This need propelled the three through four years of relentless touring and recording. The trio's Handgun and Karmic Debt, recorded with Tim O'Heir and Squeeze the Tail, Suck the Head, recorded with Steve Albini, are testimonials to their awesome rock & roll power.

This great sonic weight proved to be too much for Josh, who left the band to join the Unsane. Joel promptly came to the rescue and his addition was celebrated by a victorious tour of America. Later in the year, Josh returned to the GB fold in time for a 3 month tour and to record the band's second monster LP, Atomic Communists.

Shortly thereafter, Josh and Joel left for Kansas City to join Season to Risk and Shiner. To coincide with this blow, the band's label, Red Decibel, folded. The elixir that would heal GB's rock & roll soul came in the form of Dave and Scott. The new incarnation of GB rehearsed for one week before smashing huge audiences to paste on a nationwide tour with Zeni Geva and Today is the Day.

A few months and short jaunts later, Glazed Baby entered Six Finger Satellite's Parlour to record songs over the holidays. Ringing in 1997 with a new album nearly completed, the members of GB wend their separate ways to form other successful touring and recording combos. The band briefly reunited in 1999 to release it's final LP, Ancient Chinese Secret, a fitting document of the world's heaviest band.

During it's career, Glazed Baby shared the stage with Helmet, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Surgery, Jawbox, White Zombie, Tar, Tool, Fight, Smashing Pumpkins, Tesco Vee, The Laughing Hyenas, The Jesus Lizard, Unsane, Pearl Jam, GWAR, 13, Buzzoven, EyeHateGod and Nirvana.

Harum Scarum - Mental Health

All female crust punk from portland. they lost a member and subsequent albums lost part of their appeal. i don't know if they're still active, but this first album of theirs is an excellent crust/punk record. i've also typed out the lyrics and included them in a file.

Caught in between someone else's lies and mine. This world makes sense about none of the time. I've learned everything backwards, hateful... my head is spinning out of control. I can't even see anymore. Not what is self-inflicted by fear. My sleep is broken, I can't even breathe. My sanity a token, inside and outside... by the the absence by the pain, by the absence by the pain. They say I've gone mad they give me pills to clear my head... cuz doctors know best... I can't trust myself... in the name of mental health.

Top 5 1st-Gen Shoegaze Albums

"1st-Gen" meaning any/all groups formed prior to '93. These aren't listed in any specific order, but all fit somewhere in my top 5 list (although My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive are omitted, due to their position as leaders of the genre).

Catherine Wheel (formed '90) - Ferment (released '92)

Catherine Wheel are one of the best examples of the breadth that the shoegaze genre could achieve. While they surely have a very textured sound, often enough with that swirly/heady kind of vibe that shoegaze often gives off, they are also a very progression-conscious, sometimes even rock-oriented, band - there is movement in their music in addition to the haziness that a lot of other bands contained in this category are content to simply get lost in.

dl

Chapterhouse (formed '87) - Whirlpool (released '91)

Chapterhouse remind me a bit of a mix between The Jesus & Mary Chain's less-abrasive moments and Ecstasy & Wine-era By Bloody Valentine, meaning that there's a bit of a 60's-pop/playful kind of vibe accompanying the (occasionally) cacophonous background music. Altogether, its not at all harsh (as my evocation of The Jesus & Mary Chain may suggest), and I say "remind" because there is far more to this album than what I just said (the vocals in particular I think are quite good).

dl

The Ecstasy of St. Theresa (formed '90) - Sussurate (released '92)

With the exception of The Jesus & Mary Chain (from Scotland) The Ecstasy of Saint Theresa are the only group in this list that falls outside of England... and they are from Czechoslovakia (never saw that one coming). Their sound is a bit like Catherine Wheel's, in that each song has a rather definite progression/s, and I'd say that they are even more into the fusion of shoegaze and rock/indie than Catherine Wheel was - so much so that at times I'm pretty sure Dinosaur Jr. is their backing band. But despite their best attempts at incorporating something that was a bit different into a genre that was, at the time, very rigid, they can play as rigidly as the best of them (track 2 is a wonderful example of that). Almost drone-y, their meditations on distortion, paired with Katerina's almost ghost-like vocals, The Ecstasy of St. Theresa would be one of my top picks for accompanying a hallucinogenic experience.

dl

The Jesus & Mary Chain (formed '83) - Psychocandy (released '85)

These guys are pretty well known, but compared to MBV and Slowdive, they still fall to the wayside it seems. Which is unfortunate, because these guys are basically a perfect combination of MBV distortion and composition and Joy Division rhythm and, maybe half the time, vocals. And they're loud, too. In my opinion, these guys blow MBV out of the water when it comes down to sheer abrasive-ness... yet somehow it comes off as very mellow.

dl

Lush (formed '88) - Split (released'94)

Lush borders on Cocteau Twins territory at times. That's probably the first thing to get out of the way. They have a very prominent rhythm section, and quite a few vocal melodies going on, with some very trebly guitars contrasting the bass. Distortion wise, they're nothing to gawk at, and so with what I've just said I feel like these guys are a good example of the transition that shoegaze started going through around this time ('94/'95) - it got pop-ier, less distorted, but still has a distinctly distant kind of sound... perhaps that's due to the rather high female vocals, the very-low-presence/high-treble guitar, or the repetitive but not-highlighted use of crash cymbols, but there is something unmistakably shoegaze-y about this album, and its a real killer (especially track 3).

Týr - By the Light of the Northern Star (2009)

Put simply this is one of the best albums Týr has ever made. Somewhat akin to Amon Amarth if one replaced the word viking with pagan and substituted Týr's unique blend of progressive rock/viking metal for the death metal. Not much else to be said except that this album is very much Crom approved.

Asobi Seksu

So I really like shoegaze. A lot. And I've been pretty disappointed by every band that has come out since that genre's demise in, what, '92 (Catherine Wheel not counted)? Asobi Seksu, out of NYC, really makes me think that shoegaze, as a genre, is still a viable means of musical expression. Call me a pansy, a puss, whatever, I think these guys make some really phenomenal fuzzed-out pop music. About half of the lyrics are in Japanese (and if you've been watching my posts, you've probably figured out that I have a bit of an appreciation for what bands from Japan release), but honestly that literally plays no role here - I think this band just puts out really great music, and if it were in ancient greek or fucking swahili, I'd feel the same way.

Oh, and their name means something like "Playful Sex."

Marjoe Gortner - Bad But Not Evil (1973)

This is an album i've been looking for since last May when I first saw the documentary Marjoe. Just recently I got ahold of it and its one of the best albums i've heard all year. Musically its solid 70s rock with a few blues numbers, but the true highlight is Marjoe's lyrics/delivery. As he was so burned in his life by religion, its a natural pick for lyrical inspiration and he plays with it to no end; clever arrangements that sound like church tunes get 180'd, songs about offering plates/cash-gouging, Jesus actually just oneself, etc. To this end as well is why there is a cover Jethro Tull's song 'Wind-Up' on here; being a huge Tull-head myself i'd just like to point out that this cover is not only fucking great but also the most poignant/surreal cover i've ever heard since Gortner as a child literally WAS this song.

can music be tragic?
can things from new zealand not suck?
THIS BAND IMMEDIATELY SAYS YES TO BOTH MY STUPID LEAD IN QUESTIONS EVEN THOUGH THE FIRST ONE MADE NO SENSE

the best thing about liking a band from new zealand is they'll never tour the us so i don't have to feel guilty for not going to see them when they come around because they're playing the same night i watch mtv roadrules/realworld challenge

fucking drone rock that seems heavier than anything crowbar ever did, its like if someone took a cave full of angry rocks and gave them a guitar this album would be created, now this isn't heavy like eyehategod is, its heavy like a long looooong build up can be and when the build up finally happens into one monster riff you actually FULLY appreciate what is going on, gritty music one could really get a good brooding session to

Kubota - Watt is Love (2009)

i've decided to post the best bands that sent me music, so this is the second of three acts

the guy who sent me this email compared it to electric wizard and karma to burn
i don't know what karma to burn is but this isn't ew heavy, but its still very very good, reminds me more of oliveri fronted qotsa songs fast songs that are purposeful

this is another release that i REALLY like
french turbo rock described on their own site as nitro fueled tractor driven by obsolete robots, which to date is the best description of anything anywhere ever

not to mention they have such a good video its silly

Kubota - Spelling Aberration from butterwitch on Vimeo.

the whole having a video thing works out great because i can't describe or hype music for shit, so pressing play benefits everyone involved i say

Collapse Under The Empire - Systembreakdown (2009)

straight outta nazi fucking germany comes collapse under the empire c.u.t.e.

they sent me an email along with a link to a very solid album(only listened once) and a package for the album including a review which is so professional and shit it makes our site's writers look like a bunch of jerkoffs(get it guys?)so needless to say i will be stealing from it when i make my own review, try and guess the points when i do it, it'll be a fun little game seriously how good are the Synth-pads on this album mix that with casual playfulness of the drums on further than the end of the world.

seriously mix those two things together!!!

this is another great post-rock album that will get lost in obscurity but i can say with certainty that this album is very strong i'm burning it to listen to on the way to nh this weekend

it also came with a weird wordpad interview with no credited source, so it kinda seems like they posted their own FAQS which is ...off putting
but don't worry about that because they make reeeeeeally good music AND their country sucks at soccer

i highly recommend this cd if you like eits, the wind up bird, hidden in buildings, domakesaythink, or the mercury program

Pelican - Ephemeral (2009)

this will probably be taken down
so if they'll read this then hopefully they'll see what i write

sigh... where do i even start
this band had a metallica like fall from grace
this band got so bad i thought henry rollins joined them
this band went from so good to so bad it'd be like that guy's life who quit botch and joined minus the bear in reverse order

what the fuck happened? did mild success go to their heads??!?
also what is with the fucking eps in music lately? these eps aren't good enough to stand on their own, stop acting like 20 minutes of music is enough to get your fans to get their dick beatings out over

i'd call it lazy but i know thats not the case, how can an EP seem exhausted of ideas? i'm not talking about this album because i haven't listened to it but i'm talking about every release pelican has had except their first 3

now i'm not one of the people that bought into the hype of this band after australasia and revolted when they didn't release the same album
thats the biggest problem with people who are reformed hardcore fans(see everyone on lambgoat), they like the same thing over and over and hate when a band tries to expand a little and maybe grow they fucking breakdown emotionally and start a huge backlash on the band they over hyped to begin with

so when this band didn't release australasia2 people shit their pants, i LIKED throats firey something beckoned or whatever, its not like Peace Sells...but who's buyin' blow you out of the water but it was "good"

so whatever i'm doing a lot of typing for something that will be taken down, so whatever, stop sucking and re-releasing everything to cash in on the vinyl craze *glares at hydrahead*

listening to while i type this, its not the most groundbreaking release ever, but its definitely pretty.....i like it

TAKEN DOWN VIA REASONABLE REQUEST, the fact we even post unreleased albums to begin with is horse shit, thanks for never suing me

From Monument To Masses - On Little Known Frequencies (2009)

post rock is by far the least downloaded music on this site and i don't blame you guys outside of 5 bands everything sounds exactly the same, this band does something different, they sound like a more streamlined less silly hella, great help from electronic elements and samples/sound clips
this isn't slow paced ambient orchestral and this isn't soft build up eits stuff

at the very least this is an album you should listen to if you like the fucking champs and jackie-o mother fucker, hella/the advantage whatever

Runhild Gammelsæter - Amplicon

Runhild Gammelsæter (Thorr's Hammer, Sunn0))), Khlyst) releases her first solo recording. The purpose was to create something organic – sound with and about life.
A lonely thing, like life, arisen from void. Stillness and a microphone, vocal chords. An idea, thoughts, a goal. Sounds of cycles of life and death, birth and cessation, described with terminology from physics, chemistry and biology. Creating by amplifying an infinitely small idea – creating an Amplimer, an Amplicon. Amplicons are pieces of DNA formed as the products of natural or artificial amplification events. Like evolution, giving rise to animal forms with ability to reproduce and die. Amplifying from a minute non-tangible idea something larger which may be experienced with the auditory sense. In physics, matter creation is the appearance of elementary particles in physical processes; the opposite of annihilation. Amplicon see Gammelsæter as a creation operator, increasing the number of particles in a given state, taking the operation necessary to amplify ideas to sound. Mixed by Tore Ylvisaker of Ulver.
