Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska (1982)

I'm not a fan of everything The Boss has done but this album is pretty much perfect. This was intended to just be demos for an album with the E Street band he recorded on a 4 track in his home. No drums. No bass. Just The Boss, his guitar, a harmonica and him howling tales of personal loss, desperation, failure, family estrangement, debt, and murder (opening track is told from the POV of Charles Starkweather). There is no redemption for these characters and no happy endings here. Perfect record for a nation where 10% of it's citizens are unemployed and only projected to get worse.

You're welcome anon. I'll be upping Devils & Dust soon as well. It's not as haunting as Nebraska, but it's pretty damn good regardless.

Devils & Dust is pretty close, but it has full on slick studio production. I will be upping soon.

I'd never given Bruce a chance because, of a select few of his hit songs. But, I'm a huge Tom Waits fan as some may know or not. Probably not. But, Tom Waits likes him so I figured I'd give him a chance but, no clue what album to start with. This one is perfect. PERFECT. Thanks a million.

Medicate reads too much pitchfork.

What's the matter? Can't appreciate good music and a steady stream of positive comments?

You don't even bother to log in as GFoS anymore

Brian, "Ghost of Tom Joad" was probably the closest Springsteen album to Nebraska. "Devils & Dust" tried, but missed the mark a bit. Definitely over-produced.
